What is the difference between Sports Team and Sports Individual software

The only difference between Sports Team and Sports Individual software is the number of allowed profiles. In Sports Individual the number limited for 2 profiles, whereas in Sports team software the number of profiles is unlimited.

What are the system requirements for Sports software

Firstbeat Sports software requires Windows Operating system and screen resolution higher than 1024 x 760. Also Acrobat reader is required to open the PDF reports.

Can I use Sports with a tablet?

Yes, you can use the Sports with Windows tablet. Please notice that also USB port is required when using the real time monitor or when uploading data from the Bodyguard2 and some other devices.

Can I install the Sports software into multiple computers?

One Sports software can be installed into one computer. Please contact your Firstbeat representative to discuss about the options for using the system in multiple locations.

What does the “Sports team pack” include?

We typically customize the team pack based on your needs. The pack consists typically of:

  • Sports analysis software
  • Team receiver + heart rate belts for real time monitoring
  • Bodyguard2 units for stress and recovery measurements
  • Suunto AMBIT3 heart rate monitors for remote training and recovery data collection

Does the software analyze also GPS and acceleration data?

Most of our analysis are based on heart rate and heart rate variability. The system utilizes GPS data from the heart rate monitors to track your VO2max from the running workouts. Data integrations with other collected data (e.g. GPS) can be done with the export files or in the selected data management platforms.

What devices are compatible with Firstbeat Sports software?

Firstbeat Sports analysis requires beat-to-beat collected heart rate data. The supported formats are SDF, HRM and FIT. The following models are compatible with the Sports software:

How do I handle the warranty issues if my devices get broken?

Firstbeat devices have a limited 1 year warranty. In case your device gets broken, you can fill service request form in www.firstbeat.fi/support/firstbeat-bodyguard-service-request. Firstbeat will return repaired devices at its own costs to the customer.

What is a cloud sync feature in Sports software?

Cloud sync feature is an additional feature used for sharing the database with other Sports users within the same organization. It also enables remote data uploading to support remote coaching. This feature has an additional fee based on number of user profiles.

What is an acceptable error% in the measurements?

Error% means the missing or erroneous data, typically derived from poor belts contact with the skin, low battery status of the device or interference in the data transmission during the real time monitoring. The indicative classification for the error% is:

  • <10% Excellent
  • 10-25% Good
  • 25-35% Moderate
  • 35-50% fairly high
  • >50% Poor

How can I export data from Sports software?

Firstbeat Sports includes data-export tool which allows you to export the analysis results and raw data files in CSV file. Both scalar (average values) and vector (sec-by-sec) variables are available for various HR and HRV parameters.

How do I know if I’m using the latest version of Sports software?

You can check the latest version number in: https://www.firstbeat.com/support/sports/downloads and compare it to your current Sports version (click “Help” – “About” in the program menu). Sports software informs about the new updates automatically if the computer is connected online.

Recovery

What is the best way to perform a quick recovery test?

The test should always be performed at rest before any physical activities using as standardized settings as possible (time of the day, position, preparation etc.). The test can take place in a training ground prior the training session and it can also be performed remotely by using the Bluetooth heart rate belt with Suunto Movecount app.

How the recovery index is calculated?

Recovery index is influenced by heart rate level, heart rate variability indices and heart beat derived respiration rate. The recovery index is presented as an absolute value which is then scaled individually from 0 to 100% based on your measurement history. How often should I perform a recovery test?

In continuous use, the QRT is recommended to do at least 3 times/week while overnight recovery test can be used 1-2 times per week

How long does it take to collect my recovery baseline?

To establish the baseline, it is recommended to do 3 overnight recovery test at well rested state and when using the Quick Recovery Test, the data collection takes around 10 days until the recovery trends can be seen in the data.

How should I use the daily stress report?

Daily stress report is mostly used as a pedagogical tool to show how different lifestyle factors are effecting on body. The training load does not come only from the training sessions, but all the choices you do in leisure time affects the body as well. Typically travelling, heat, high altitude and jetlag are the factors that are elevating the stress level. Having stress reactions on daytime is highly normal, but there are always some stress factors that can be avoided as well.

What does “excluded time period” mean in recovery test report?

In overnight recovery test the Recovery Index (RI) is calculated from the first 4 hours of sleep. From this period the analysis automatically filters the data by excluding artifacts and heart beat data close to artifact sections which would impact on HRV analysis (spectral components). Excluded time means the sum of all RR-intervals which have been removed before calculating the recovery index.

What is the range of the real time monitor?

In optimal environments the range is 200 meters. To ensure optimal range and data quality the receiver should be placed to open place where is no constraints between athletes and receiver, antenna should be directed upwards and the receiver placed height over 1.5m from ground.

What is the difference between EPOC and TRIMP?

Both EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption) and TRIMP (Training Impulse) are used to quantify training load and they accumulated exponentially to training intensity. The key difference is that EPOC decreases during the recovery breaks while TRIMP only accumulates upwards. Also EPOC is scaled in Training Effect (1.0-5.0) helping the interpretations while TRIMP scores doesn’t have automatic classification.

What is the difference between %VO2max and %HRmax

Both variables describe the relative intensity. %VO2max value utilizes %HRmax, respiration rate and mathematical modelling of On- and off-responses of the VO2 kinetics to estimate more accurately the intensity of the exercise.

Fitness Testing

How do you calculate the VO2max in fitness tests?

VO2max (ml/kg/min) is estimated from the workload using the equations published in scientific journals for running, walking, cycling and rowing.

What is Firstbeat fitness test?

Firstbeat fitness test is performed from every running workout from which the heart rate and GPS data is available. The test does not require any specific protocol, the VO2max value is estimated from the speed/HR relationships using the advanced data segmentation. Please see further info from Firstbeat white paper.

How to create my own protocols for the fitness tests?

In addition to already existing protocols such as beep test, Conconi and YoYo-tests, you can also create your own submaximal or maximal fitness testing protocol. The feature supports protocols for cycling, rowing, running and walking given that the external load is available (watts, speed). Just select submaximal/maximal fitness test and click “create new” to define your starting workload, stage duration and workload increments between stages. Please note that the real time test guidance is not available. You should perform the test following the pre-planned protocol, collect the heart rate data during the test and afterwards create fitness test report from the test.

Device Not Found

Device not found after Firstbeat Team Receiver update

Firstbeat Sports version 4.7 includes also a firmware update for the Firstbeat Team receiver(RTX4 model): When the user starts the Training Monitor, the software will recommend to update the receiver firmware. This should take only a minute. If the process fails and Sports doesn’t find the receiver after update, please close the Sports application and run the updater software again from: C:Program Files (x86)FirstbeatFirstbeat SPORTSFirstbeat RTX 4 Firmware updater.exe.

Usually running the firmware updater again fixes the problem. If the problem still persist please contact to Firstbeat support: support@firstbeat.com.

Device not found after installing Firstbeat Sports at first time

The problem is most likely in the driver software, but ensuring this please try to connect the device to the different USB port and restart the Sports software. If USB port change didn’t help you might need to update the Firstbeat Team Receiver driver software. Start driver update by downloading the newest version of Firstbeat Team Receiver driver package from here. Next, please disconnect the receiver from your computer and run the driver installation software. After the driver installation, please connect the Team Receiver to your computer. Now start the Firstbeat SPORTS’s Training monitor to ensure that device works correctly.

If the above did not help, try to update the driver from the Device Manager. Plug in the Firstbeat Team Receiver and open Windows Device Manager. Find the device and with the right mouse button click the device. From the opening menu select ‘Update driver’. From the opening dialog select the second choice ‘Browse my computer for driver software’. Then click ‘Browse’ and find this folder: C:Program Files (x86)Firstbeat Team Receiver Driver (default directory in Win7). Then click ‘Next’ and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the driver update. Finally when the driver is updated, test the connection with the belt.

NOTE: In some cases the Team Receiver driver folder name can be “USBRTX4 with USBRTX3 Driver”

If USB port change didn’t help you might need to update the Firstbeat dongle driver software. First try to update the driver from the Sports or Sports Individual installation folder. The default directory in Win7 is: C:Program Files (x86)FirstbeatFirstbeat SPORTS (Individual)Drivers. Select the Firstbeat_Dongle_Driver.exe file and run the installation. After this test the connection with the belt.

If the above did not help, try to update the driver from the Device Manager. Plug in the dongle and open Windows Device Manager. Find the device and with the right mouse button click the device. From the opening menu select ‘Update driver’. From the opening dialog select the second choice ‘Browse my computer for driver software’. Then click ‘Browse’ and find this folder: C:Program Files (x86)Firstbeat Dongle Driver (default directory in Win7). Then click ‘Next’ and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the driver update. Finally when the driver is updated, test the connection with the belt.

The problem is most likely in the driver software, but ensuring this please try to connect the device to the different USB port and restart the Sports software. Check that Windows is able to find your device and that yellow and green LEDs are on. The problem could also be related to low battery charge so try leaving the device to computer USB port for a while and try to create connection again.

If you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system:

Check that you have installed the Firstbeat Bodyguard 2 driver. You can run the installation from the Firstbeat program’s installation folder. Open the folder and select BodyguardInstaller.exe.

Connect the device to another USB port.

You might need to reinstall the driver software. Here is how to delete and install the driver:

  1. In Windows, choose ’Control panel’ -> ’Program and features’ -> from the list that opens up, find ’Windows Driver Package – Firstbeat Technologies Ltd….’ and click it with the right mouse button. Select ’Uninstall/change’
  2. After the driver has been uninstalled, re-install it by selecting ’Start’ -> ’All Programs’ -> ’Firstbeat’ -> ’Firstbeat Uploader’ ->’Install Firstbeat Bodyguard driver’. After the installation, re-plug the BG2 to the computer, wait for Windows to tell you that the device installation is complete and test the connection.

If you are still not able to get device recognized please contact Firstbeat Support or fill in a service request at Firstbeat website.

Suunto Team pod or Suunto Memory belt

First check that you have shut down the Suunto Moveslink program. This program reserves the device drivers so that Firstbeat programs are unable to connect to the device.

Check that you have installed the device drivers. You can check this by plugging your device to USB port and opening the Device manger from Control Panel. Select ‘Control Panel’ -> Device Manager’ -> Ports (COM & LPT). Open the Ports –list by clicking the arrow and double-click the ‘Suunto Sports device’. Open tab ‘Driver’ and check the driver version. It should be 4.40.1.0 [22.7.2007]. If it is not, you need to change it.

Change the driver by selecting ‘Update driver’. From the opening dialog select ‘Browse my computer for driver software’. Next select ‘Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer’. Remove the selection ‘Show compatible hardware’. From the table on the right select the driver version 4.40.1.0 [22.7.2007] and click ‘Next’. Your computer starts to update the driver. After it is finished test the connection with the Firstbeat program.

If this does not work you need to uninstall Suunto USB drivers from your computer. Open ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Programs and features’. Find all the programs that start by the name ‘Suunto USB…’ and uninstall them. After this install the driver again from the Firstbeat program’s installation folder. Divers are found under the folder ‘Drivers’. After you have run the installation test the connection with the Firstbeat software.

If uninstalling and re-installing the driver does not work and you still are not able to connect your device with the Firstbeat program you need to remove the incompatible driver from your computer. Here is how to do it:

  1. Open folder C:WindowsSystem32
  2. Copy the following files away from the Systme32 folder to a different location, for example to desktop.
    1. silabenm.sys
    2. silabser.sys
    3. wdtCoinstaller01009.dll
  3. Connect your device (Team Pod or docking station and Memory belt) to computer USB port. Windows should now automatically install the compatible driver. If not you can install it with the above instructions.

Garmin Forerunner 610/910XT

Check that pairing is ON in your Garmin device from the device settings.

Check that you have successfully paired your device with the Garmin ANT Agent software. If the connection to Garmin Connect works the pairing is successful.

Pair your device with Sports by opening Tools -> Device settings -> Garmin device config tool. Select the profile you wish to pair the device to.

If you have renamed your device Sports might not recognize your device. Check that your device has its original name.

Movescount

Problems in setting up the sync with Movescount

Check that you don’t have manually added moves, moves that do not contain RR data or moves that are under two minutes in length. Check also if you have duplicate moves in Movescount.com. If you have these kinds of measurements you need to delete them from Movescount.com.

Check that you have added the Movescount.com settings to Sports Movescount settings and that you have accepted Sports or Sports Individual as a partner app in Movescount.com. Remember to use the same email in Sports as you have in Movescount.com.

Data Uploading

Analysis failed with my Garmin files

Analyze of the Garmin files usually fails when the files doesn’t contain any R-R data. Please check that R-R recording is on: Open Tools -> Device configuration -> Garmin config tool. If it is not ON, select it and, save the dialog. Then connect your device with Garmin ANT Agent to finish the set up change. To make sure that R-R recording switched on record short measurement and let the Garmin transfer the measurement to your computer. Next try to load files to the SPORTS.

Loading process from Garmin Forerunner 610/910XT freezes

Check that R-R recording is on: Open Tools -> Device configuration -> Garmin config tool. If it is not ON, select it and, save the dialog. Then connect your device with Garmin ANT Agent to finish the set up change.

From the Garmin Activities folder, check that there are no files which do not have R-R recording. These measurements cannot be analyzed since the calculation is based on the data we can pull out from R-R data. Therefore the loading process might fail. The default directory in Windows 7 environment is C:Users[YOUR COMPUTER NAME]AppDataRoamingGarminDevices[YOUR DEVICE ID]Activities

How I can load files from Garmin Foerunner 620 and 920

1.Connect Forerunner 620/920 to computer via USB cable

2. Download R-R recording setting file from here

3. Extract the ZIP file

4. Save the .FIT file into Forerunner 620/920 into location X:GARMINNEWFILES

5. Disconnect the device from USB cable

R-R recording should now be on. Measurement data is saved e.g. to Garmin device into ‘Activities’ subfolder. From this folder measurements can be downloaded to SPORTS.

Moves need to be loaded manually by selecting ’Load R-R file’ -> ’Load from file’.

Cloud Sync

How do I activate the Cloud sync feature?

Cloud sync enables support for remote coaching and centralized database management. Athletes can upload files easily to server from anywhere and the coach will have the access to the data within seconds. Teams using several licenses also create shared databases by using cloud-sync feature. Cloud-sync is a additional feature and if you are interested about the feature please contact your service provider.

Firstbeat SPORTS Cloud sync fails with some measurements

If synchronization fails with some measurements the reason is most likely with measurments which are already in the Sports with different start time. Firstbeat Sports Sync tool is not able handle the situations where the same measurement is with different start time in the Sports and Firstbeat Cloud server.

Activation Process

I have problems with Firstbeat Sports activation process

If the Firstbeat Sports or Sports Individual activation process evokes error message “Invalid activation key”, please check that you have filled the activation key correctly in the activation dialog. It is always recommended to use clipboard to copy paste the activation key to the activation key field.

When you are using offline activation remember that do not close the Sports activation process between the offline activation steps. To ensure easy activation process it’s always recommended to use the online activation.

This is a new version without the need of an Arduino board.
Instead its based on a USB-UART Serial Adapter Module ( FT232RL in this example)

Last year I wanted to get the data out of my Diving Computer without buying $100 cable,
and I succeed doing it by using an Arduino board.

I was getting lots of comments from people who didn’t succeed building this using other Arduino boards and I thought there must be a way to make it easier.
It just a half duplex (or ‘1 wire’ ) UART , so why it not build a converter from UART to ‘1 Wire’? It should’t be that complicated 🙂

Lets try to make it short

The diving computer has a connector with 2 connection points and a ground.
After poking with it for a ‘few’ hours (I drained all my computer battery and had only 6 dives with it!!) I found that:

  • A voltage on the Enable pin makes the diving computer enter the Data Transfer mode.
  • The Data pin is a bi-directional line, using UART for communication.
  • All the metal around the pins is ‘ground’.

The Suunto DM5 application is looking for a communication port named ‘Suunto USB Serial Port‘.

I used USB to UART Serial Adapter based on the FT232R chip.
Last time I modified the Arduino driver in order to change the device display name,
but after digging I found that Suunto use PID 0xF680 with VID 0x0403 which is the Vendor ID of FTDI chips.
That’s the reason I choose to use the FT232R.
I can still modify the driver, but I have a better option now which is to write to the FT232R eeprom memory and change its PID to 0xF680.
Windows think it’s the Suunto cable and install Suunto drivers with the name we want.
With this method I don’t need to disable the driver signing enforcement.

To modify the eeprom, I used MProg which is a utility from FTDI.

I first scanned for devices on the (Device->Scan), then read the current settings (Tools->Read and Parse), and then change the PID (Product ID) to F680 as you can see in the picture.
I flashed the new settings (Device->Program), uninstalled the current driver in the device manager (right click, Uninstall Device), and removed if from the USB port and then plugged it again.
I don’t know if it’s possible to program it multiple time so it might be irreversible.

Update: It might not be possible to change the PID of a cloned FTDI chip.
In this case, you can still use a modified driver (and disable windows driver signing enforcement), or just use other app like Subsurface which just asks for a COM port number

I can still sync the diving computer without doing this step, but I have to use other apps like ‘Subsurface’.

Because there is only one data line, it was not possible to connect both RX and TX of the UART adapter together as is.
I built a converter circuit with some transistor and resistors to make it ‘1 wire’ half duplex UART.

I used the 3.3V from the USB to UART module.
I also changed the jumper on the module to 3.3V (5V might hard the diving computer)

BOM:
– 1x USB-UART module (FT232RL)
– 2x 2N7000 NPN transistors
– 2x 1k resistors
– 1x 15k resistor
– Jumper cables (optional)
– Breadboard (optional)

All can be found in eBay or Aliexpress

If you are using a breadboard you almost don’t need to solder anything.
The only problematic pin is the ’33v’ pin that you have better a jumper cable soldered to.

The Ugly Side

I still didn’t find any novel way to connect with this connector.
I took a clamp and drilled holes in it, then pushed ‘pogo pins’ in such a way they will touch the connection points.
I need to think and make something more simple.

I can now sync my diving computer with my PC.
